2010 Annual Gathering The 2010 Gathering was held at Culzean Castle in Ayrshire on Saturday 4th September. A Board Meeting was held in the morning at 11.00 am followed by lunch and a guided tour of the castle during the afternoon.
In beautiful sunny conditions the Clan participants were piped to the castle door by the Clan piper, Diarmid Lindsay, and the party was given a very comprehensive tour of the castle interior by the National Trust for Scotland guide. The gardens and views from the castle were magnificent and, despite a sea haze, the impressive sight of Ailsa Craig was just visible off the coast. It was lovely to see some new faces (and of course the old ones) but, in particular, it was a great pleasure to meet with our overseas members to whom a warm welcome was extended. Many new friends were made and tales exchanged, continuing to the tea room afterwards, until we finally had to depart on our weary homeward journeys after a most enjoyable and memorable gathering. 2010 Annual General Meeting The AGM was held on Saturday 17th April at the Tinto Hotel, Symington. Office Bearers were elected and the position of the Editor to the Board of Management was filled following a substantial period of vacancy. The meeting was chaired by Diarmid Lindsay. 2009 Gathering The 2009 Gathering was held over the extended weekend 25th July to 28th July as part of the "Homecoming". The tent at Holyrood was well attended by clansfolk on the Saturday and Sunday. Representatives of the Clan marched up the Royal Mile on the evening of Saturday 25th carrying the Earl of Crawford's banner. Clansfolk met in the Lindsay Room, Kilconquhar Castle on Monday 27th for lunch and spent the afternoon visiting the homes of the Earl of Crawford at Balcarres and of the Earl of Lindsay at Lahill. On Tuesday 28th July an expedition was made to Edzell Castle and gardens and to the "Retreat" in Glenesk for lunch. Post lunch visits extended to Invermark Castle at the head of the glen and to the Lindsay Aisle in the churchyard close to Edzell Castle. 2009 Annual General Meeting The AGM was held at the Tinto Hotel, Symington on Satuday 21st March 2009. The main issues under discussion related to the arrangements for the Gathering to be held in July. The meeting was chaired by Anne Lindsay. 2008 Gathering The 2008 Gathering was held on Saturday 6th September at Floors Castle, by Kelso. The incessant rain persisted all day keeping clansmen mainly indoors under the roof of the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. An excellent lunch was followed by a guided tour of the castle interior, from where the grounds could be viewed through the rain streaked windows. The River Tweed could be observed in full flood, flowing a close but reasonably safe distance from the castle. This expedition was followed with a cream tea served in the castle restaurant, with piping accompanyment, prior to the retreat under Lindsay tartan umbrellas to the car park. Although some of us made it straight home, others travelling south found the main roads blocked by flooding and were not so lucky. Those of us who did not make it straight home for another reason were our Lindsay members and guests from over the Atlantic, who we were delighted to welcome to the Gathering, and hope they have a safe passage back when they must leave the "homeland". It is hoped they will return with reinforcements for next year's Gathering in July 2009. 2008 Annual General Meeting The AGM was held at 3.00 pm on 10th May 2008 in the Tinto Hotel in the village of Symington, near Biggar. Despite torrential rain, thunder and lightning the hotel offered warm and comfortable accommodation for the event. The meeting was attended by the Secretary (Anne Lindsay), Treasurer (John Lindsay), Members of the Board of Management and Society Members. Office Bearers and retiring Board Members were re-elected. A vacancy now exists for a Trustee following the sad departure of Tom Lindsay earlier in the year. The Treasurer's accounts were presented and accepted by members in attendance. The main issues of concern were the Society's annual Gathering for 2008 and the International Clan Gathering ("The Homecoming") to be held in Edinburgh in July 2009. It is intended that the Society will liaise with Lindsays abroad to secure a tent for the Clan at Holyrood. Potential social events during the 2009 Gathering period will require further consideration and planning. A suggestion by Jenny Lindsay to hold the Society's Gathering in September 2008 at Luffness, East Lothian is under consideration. The last Gathering at Luffness was in 1960. More information will be posted in this connection on the website shortly. In terms of Data Protection requirements, the webmaster (Diarmid Lindsay) requested that clearance be obtained from the Office Bearers and Board of Management before names could be listed on the website. Thanks are due to John Lindsay (Pinner) for graciously taking the chair for the meeting. 2007 Gathering The 2007 Gathering was held at Kellie Castle in Fife on Saturday, 1st September 2007. It was well attended by clansfolk and their families, including the Clan Chief and his grandchildren. Members assembled for lunch at Meldrums Hotel, Ceres prior to the tour round the castle and splendid gardens at Kellie Castle in beautiful sunshine. Clan members were welcomed to the castle grounds by the sound of music from the Clan Piper. Following a very informative guide round the castle, tea was served in the castle tearoom.
Lindsay Connections There is a distant connection between the Lindsays and Kellie Castle. Alexander Erskine, the 4th Earl of Kellie, married his neighbour Lady Anne Lindsay, daughter of Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres on 11th June 1699. Colin Lindsay, the founder of the village of Colinsburgh in Fife, is a direct forebear of the current Chief of the Clan Lindsay, the 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres, who attended the Gathering this year. Lady Anne Lindsay was, incidentally, the half sister of both the 4th and 5th Earls of Balcarres (Alexander and James respectively). Her father Colin, who died in 1722, had 4 wives. To avoid confusion, this is not Lady Anne Barnard of Robin Gray connection (born 27th Novermber 1750) who was actually the daughter of James, 5th Earl of Balcarres. James' son Alexander became the 6th Earl of Balcarres and also inherited the title of 23rd Earl of Crawford when the 22nd Earl (George) died in 1808. This Alexander is the GGGGGrandfather of our current Clan Chief, the 29th Earl of Crawford.
