Roots of the Society
26thearl.jpg

The Clan Lindsay Society was founded at a meeting held in George Street Edinburgh on 27th October 1897 under the direction of its first President, James Ludovic Lindsay, the 26th Earl of Crawford.

At this inaugural meeting Lord Crawford uttered the following words: - "The meeting today is the meeting of a family" reflecting the structure of the clan being predominately formed from descendents of those bearing the same name.  His lordship further described it as the resuscitation of a family group.

Since its formation, the Society has endeavoured to hold Annual Meetings and Gatherings whenever possible, although this has not always been achieved, particularly during the war years.  A list of Gatherings has been compiled (listed below) since the first Gathering at Balcarres in 1898 up to the most recent 2008 Gathering held at Floors Castle by Kelso in the Borders.

The accompanying photograph, by the Dover Street Studios, is of the late 26th Earl as deputy of the Great Stewart of Scotland (the Prince of Wales), at the coronation of King Edward VII in August 1902.

Present Clan Chief

The present Clan Chief, and President of the Society, is the Right Honourable Robert Alexander Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford.  Lord Crawford is the premier Earl of Scotland with a direct blood link to Robert the Bruce through the marriage of David, the 1st Earl of Crawford, to Princess Catherine Stewart, the daughter of Robert II just over 600 years ago.  He was appointed as a Knight of the Thistle in 1996 and is shown in full regalia beside the Queen in the accompanying picture taken at a sombre occasion in 2006.

Past Gatherings

The purposes for which the Clan Lindsay Society was formed included "the collection and preserving of records and traditions relating to the history of the Clan",  and it has now existed long enough to have developed some traditions of its own.  Although the Society was inaugurated in 1897, the preparatory work began in 1895.

The first important event (which in some measure gave rise to the Society's formation) was the meeting at Balcarres to mark the 500th anniversary of the creation of the Earldom of Crawford in September 1898.  At the first Annual General Meeting held on 21st October 1898 it was moved that a Gathering be held at Edzell Castle in the following September, and so began the Gatherings as we know them.
